Website highlights accident prevention in the home
The importance of keeping children safe in the home is the focus of a new interactive website launched by Belfast City Council.
The new colourful cartoon-styled website, www.belfastcity.gov.uk/hazardhunter aims to educate children about how to prevent accidents in the home by taking a tour around a virtual house owned by Hazard Hunter.
The message of keeping safe in the home is reinforced at the end of the tour with competitions and quizzes.
It is believed that this is the first website dedicated to home safety to be provided by a local authority in Northern Ireland. The website also has links to the Fire Brigade's website.
A spokesperson for Belfast City Council said it was felt that there was a need for the website as each year in Northern Ireland an average of 12 children die and around 100, 000 children require treatment in A & E units as a result of an accidents in the home.
For those who do not have Internet access a Hazard Hunter educational pack containing a workbook and teachers' notes is also available for free from the Home Safety Office on 028 9032 0202.
