Minister launches Adult Learning Week in Newry
The Minister for Employment and Learning Carmel Hanna was in Newry on Tuesday to launch this year’s Adult Learners’ week.
Adult Learners’ Week which will run from 11 to 18 May 2002 is a means of increasing awareness of the many possibilities that exist for those wishing to return to learning.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister said: “A culture of lifelong learning brings real benefits to society, the economy and the individual.
“Adult Learners’ Week presents an ideal opportunity for those involved in the provision of adult education to build upon existing networks and partnerships.
“This year’s chosen theme ‘Connecting Adults with Local Learning’ sits very comfortably with the Programme for Government’s focus on giving people an opportunity to update their knowledge, skills and qualifications at any stage in their lives.”
Mrs Hanna also congratulated Anne Maddocks, the winner of the Adult Learners’ Award in 2001. Mrs Maddocks has brought up six children and now helps to look after six grandchildren.
Mrs Hanna said: “Anne has demonstrated how returning to learning can change lives. She, and many others, are an example to all those who might be considering taking up the challenge of returning to learning.”
