A man has died following a road accident in Co Antrim. The victim was killed as he was walking along the Galgorm Road in Ahoghill shortly after 7.30am on Thursday when he was hit by a van. The deceased was named today as Mr Atcheson, who was 70 and came from Gloonan Hill in Ahoghill.

North South Body Celebrated

The Stormont Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has participated in a special event in Armagh to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the North South Ministerial Council. The event was organised jointly by the Royal Irish Academy, Armagh City and District Council and the Joint Secretaries of the North South Ministerial Council. "All island co-operation through has never been more important than during the difficult economic climate that we face at this present time. There has been a clear focus on co-operation and the delivery of real benefits, including on infrastructure, trade and business, tourism, education and in tackling major issues that confront such as child protection, suicide prevention, barriers to mobility, the environment and transport," he said.

Ardoyne March Steps Out

The Apprentice Boys parade in Belfast this Saturday will go ahead as planned, despite last minute calls from an MLA for the Parades Commission to review the decision. The SDLP's Alban Maginness had said that allowing Saturday's parade would have been a "bad decision" at any time but added: "Right now, with political stalemate and the threat of meltdown, with attempts at mob rule in Portadown, it will play straight into the hands of republican dissidents waiting eagerly in the wings." The parade will pass the Crumlin Road interface at Ardoyne, the scene of violent clashes in the past.

Torrens Petition 'Disturbing'

A bid to have Greysteel killer Torrens Knight freed has been slammed by a local SDLP politician: "A petition circulating in the Garvagh area is disgusting in the extreme and has caused several families to complain to me," East Derry SDLP Assembly Member John Dallat has said. He slammed the petition and said the Secretary of State should revoke Knight's licence permanently after he was returned to jail for a serious assault on two sisters.

Blue Book's 'Green' Accolade

Ireland's Blue Book - which catalogues exclusive holiday accommodation - has awarded its renowned EU Flower Ecolabel for exemplary 'green' practices to a Fermanagh tourist facility, Belle Isle Estate. Owner, Charles Plunket started his green journey by replacing the luxury estate's ancient oil burning boiler with a wood pellet one, and recognising the cost benefits of going green, investigated a transformation of the rest of his business. Now, the successful business recycles as much as it can, uses environmentally-friendly cleaning products, scrupulously monitors energy usage, and informs all their guests of environmental and economically sustainable activities in the area such as walking trails, cycling, public transport and slow food options.
