Other NI News In Brief
Ducks Repreived
The freezing weather has had a positive impact, with a ban on the shooting of waterfowl to protect them during the continuing cold spell coming into operation. It is the first time a legal suspension of hunting ducks, geese and waders has been imposed in Northern Ireland. The ban is necessary to protect birds which would experience difficulties in feeding and roosting due to snow and ice affecting their habitats. Shooting will be prohibited for at least seven days. The ban was imposed by the NI Environment Agency.
Third Cold Payment Triggered
The Department for Social Development is to make a third Cold Weather Payment as a result of the continuing severe weather conditions. The latest Cold Weather Payment was triggered by forecast information supplied by the Met Office and affects the whole of Northern Ireland for the period from 5 January 2010 to 11 January 2010. Qualifying customers can expect to receive their payment for this latest period of cold weather on 13 January 2010 either by direct payment to customer accounts or by cheque. The first and second payments for weeks ending 24 December 2009 and 4 January 2010 should be received by customers by 6 January 2010.
Flood In Focus
The first of three evidence gathering sessions set up by the cross-departmental Flooding Taskforce will take place in Fermanagh today to hear from those directly affected by the recent high level of floods. It is the Townhall, Enniskillen, and will hear from local councillors, the Ulster Farmers Union, NI Agricultural Producers Association and Fermanagh Economic Development Organisation along with others from the business and commerce sector. Two further sessions will be held on Monday 11 January to hear directly from local residents about the challenges they faced at the time and in the aftermath of the flooding. These sessions will be held in The Townhall in Enniskillen from 10.30am – 12.30pm and the Castle Park Centre, Lisnaskea from 2.00pm – 4.00pm.
Derry Alert Cleared
A security alert in Londonderry has ended after the suspicious object at the centre of a police search turned out to be a pellet gun. Traffic and shopping were disrupted in the city on Tuesday afternoon as PSNI officers responded to a report of a suspicious object at Woodburn Park. A PSNI spokesman said the object had been examined by army technical officers who identified it as a BB gun.
ATMs In Focus
SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley raised the issue of ATM robberies with security minister Paul Goggins when they met on Tuesday. The meeting follows the most recent robbery of an ATM from a shop in Forkhill last weekend. Mr Bradley said: "I put it to Paul Goggins that ATM robberies are spiralling out of control and that very little has been to halt this trend. ATM robberies are affecting an important service to the public especially in rural areas. Most of them have taken place at family-run businesses, local employers struggling to compete against multi-national giants in the local towns who can ill-afford these type of losses," he said.
