Heritage Lottery grant for St Peter's Cathedral in west Belfast
New impetus was given to the regeneration of the Falls area of Belfast with the announcement by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) of a £2.1million grant for restoration work to St Peter's Cathedral.
The Grade A-listed Cathedral, which is an important landmark in the area and a feature of Belfast's skyline, is to undergo a complete facelift involving major exterior repair and restoration of its roof and stonework.
The project will prove of enormous benefit to the burgeoning tourist trade in the area, with latest figures setting the annual visitor numbers to the cathedral at 120,000.
The restoration of St Peter's is in line with Belfast City Council's overall policy of urban regeneration in which the HLF has played a significant part. Many other notable buildings and landmarks in the city have benefited from HLF awards, including St George's Market, the Albert Clock, Christchurch and the nearby St Anne's Cathedral. Indeed, an active partnership exists between the two cathedrals which engage in combined fund-raising enterprises.
Kevin Baird, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for Northern Ireland, said: “This project will not only restore a nationally important place of worship but also assist with the regeneration of the surrounding area. HLF awards like this have a huge impact on the social and economic health of an area.
"We are looking forward to visitors and local people around St Peter's Cathedral, one of Belfast's best-known landmarks, enjoying the benefits of lottery support.”
The Heritage Lottery Fund provides financial support for the protection and enhancement of our heritage of local, regional or national importance for the benefit of communities throughout the UK.
So far, 8,108 grants have been awarded with a combined value of over £1.8billion. In Northern Ireland, 276 grants have been awarded with a value of £60million. (MB)

Led by the Dean, the Very Reverend Stephen Forde, the Cathedral is preparing for a year of celebrations, commemorations, and special events.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

Imagine Belfast brings new life to Victorian masterpiece
The latest jewel of Belfast’s Victorian architectural heritage to be refurbished and given a fresh lease of life is the former Northern Bank in Royal Avenue. Designed in the 1880’s by John Lanyon, it is the new home of Imagine Belfast 2008, the organisation which is bidding for the city to become European Capital of Culture in seven years time.
