Other NI News In Brief
Claudy Police Base Call
SDLP East Derry candidate Cllr Thomas Conway has called for the site of Claudy police station to be redeveloped in consultation with the community. "The station closed more than a year ago as part of the PSNI rationalisation plan. We in the SDLP took the view that policing was not just about bricks and mortar, it was about officers on the ground. At a recent District Policing Partnership meeting we were promised additional policing resources and we are generally satisfied with that. But the station is still sitting there, bricked up, like Colditz at the top of the town. Now a planning application has come in for relocation of the telecommunications mast, which carries commercial signal equipment, from the front to the back of the site. This indicates to me that there is no overall plan for disposal and/or development of the site and that is not satisfactory. The police station was a community facility and the community should be consulted on what should replace it," he said.
HBO Filming Welcomed
Sinn Féin MP Martin McGuinness has welcomed the news that HBO is to film a nine-part television series A Games of Thrones throughout the Belfast area. "This is yet an another boost for the fast developing film industry. We have already seen the Titanic Quarter, the centre of Belfast and other such locations playing host to the world's finest actors in what is becoming a regular venture for the global film industry. HBO, a major player in TV production, is further evidence of what we have to offer. I look forward to hearing the clapper boards coming down on locally constructed and operated sets and even more so to the finished product," the Stormont Deputy First Minister enthused. GP Practice Praised
The Health Minister has hailed the role of the General Practitioner (GP) as he visited Carryduff surgery on the outskirts of Belfast. "I have had many opportunities to experience the frontline in health and social care services. Today I have the opportunity to see at first hand the very important work of the GP. This practice looks after 9,600 patients, many of whom are very young. As well as catering for its patients, this practice also provides training for up and coming GPs," he said, also praising the role of primary care staff including GPs for contributing to the success of the swine flu vaccination programme in Northern Ireland. "GPs can take credit for the high uptake rates for the vaccination programme. Their hard work over the last 10 months, has helped to protect the most vulnerable in our society from swine flu."
Buses Are 'Wright'
Invest Northern Ireland Chief Executive Alastair Hamilton today announced investments totalling £7million in market led innovation by The Wright Group in Ballymena. The Wright Group is a leading independent supplier of accessible buses for public transportation systems in global markets. With £1.8millon of support from Invest NI - part funded by the European Regional Development Fund - The Wright Group will engage in a number of R&D projects to develop new environmentally friendly technologies and cost effective bus designs to take advantage of changing demands in the marketplace. This will be complemented by a programme of staff training. The announcement was made as the company unveiled its latest bus design, a unique double decker bus which is targeted at the increasingly competitive Asian market.
Economic Forum 'Reports'
The Stormont First Minister, Peter Robinson and the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness have announced that they will bring the recommendations put forward by the Cross Sector Advisory Forum to the NI Executive for consideration. Ministers chaired a meeting of the Forum this week where the various working groups set up by the forum brought forward a number of proposals. The 70 recommendations cover issues such as planning, availability of bank finance, benefit uptake, promoting renewables and the social economy, illegal money lending, benefit uptake, small business access to procurement projects, money guidance rollout, development of the gas industry and energy efficiency. Convened by the Ministers in April 2009, the Forum acted as an economic taskforce to provide advice and ideas to map a path through the current economic crisis.
Rigger Is Tops
A director of the Belfast-based lighting rental and sales company, Production Services Ireland (PSI) has become the first person in Ireland to attain the Professional Lighting & Sound Association (PLASA)'s National Rigging Certificate (NRC) Level 3 'rigging supervisor' level. Sean Pagel who was awarded the certificate commented: "With health & safety issues increasingly topping all rigging agendas, and our commitment to offering clients the very best and highest quality services, industry driven and recognised qualifications like this are vitally important."
