Thousands Of Houses 'Lie Empty'

The number of vacant houses or apartments in the Irish Republic stands at 345,000, or 17% of all housing, according to new report published by the Urban Environment Project at University College Dublin.

This is higher than a recent estimate by researchers at the National Institute of Regional and Spatial Analysis, based in NUI Maynooth, which put the figure at 300,000.

However, the Construction Industry Federation maintains only 40,000 homes are vacant. Commenting on the findings, Fine Gael's Richard Bruton said: "The UCD report presents the sheer scale of Ireland's surplus housing stock in very stark terms.

"This is the dismal legacy of 13 years of Fianna Fáil Government, and in particular Brian Cowen’s boom/bust policies as Finance Minister.

"The key question is: when will the property market recover? The report's findings indicate that Ireland faces the prospect of a zombie housing market for years to come," he said.
