BBC's Christine Skis Channel

Northern Ireland-born television presenter Christine Bleakley has successfully water-skied across the English Channel in aid of BBC Sports Relief.

The One Show star completed the arduous challenge in just over an hour.

Before setting out on the 21-mile ski Christine, 31, admitted she was "petrified".

However, the former Sky High girl managed to cross the busy shipping lane to France amid sub zero temperature, raising thousands for charity.

Christine suffered several setbacks this week, as weather conditions ruled the challenge too dangerous.

Viewers across the UK have been sending messages of support to the self-confessed 'poor swimmer'.

Christine decided to undertake the water ski bid after visiting East Africa last year.

"I went to Uganda where I met Hajjara, a teenage girl carrying the weight of the world on her young shoulders," the presenter said.

"After losing her parents to Aids, she's been left all alone to care for her younger siblings."

The BBC's Sport Relief Twitter page confirmed Christine's achievement with this message: "Despite everything Christine can still manage a smile. A sunnier disposition it would be hard to find."
