Minister opens major Jobsfair in St George's market Belfast
The Minister for Employment and Learning Carmel Hanna has welcomed 47 employers at a major Jobsfair in St George’s Market, Belfast, which is offering hundreds of opportunities to people looking for jobs.
The Minister opened the one-day event on Tuesday January 29, which was staged by Belfast Gasworks Employment Matching Service (GEMS).
Speaking on Tuesday, Mrs Hanna said: “Much has been achieved in recent years to revitalise the Laganside area of Belfast and it is of the utmost importance that local people are now helped to grasp the employment opportunities which have become available.
“The valuable opportunities being created today for so many people are a direct result of a partnership approach between the local community and the private and public sectors. The Jobsfair is a practical measure which contributes to the wider strategy and vision for the Initiative and is a springboard for the newly formed GEMS.
“I would urge all those wanting to progress into the world of work to take full advantage of the wide range of opportunities available."
Halifax Direct, which sponsored this event in association with Belfast GEMS, is planning to create several hundred new jobs in its new Call Centre on the Gasworks site this year.
Other major employers, who were present at the Jobsfair included well-known names such as Belfast City Airport, Group 4 Security Services, Royal Mail, Jurys, Translink, Radiocontact, Recruitment Service (Civil Service), Richardsons Fertilizers, Mount Charles Group and Police Service of Northern Ireland. Investigation Into South Belfast Fire
An investigation has been launched into a fire at a former primary school in south Belfast. The Fire Service confirmed they were called to the blaze at the school on School Road in Newtownbreda at about 22:00 on Sunday. It is understood the building was badly damaged in the fire.
