District Council “mothball” Enniskillen’s St Angelo Airport
Fermanagh District Council have announced that St Angelo Airport near Enniskillen is to close.
The airport, which catered for passenger flights during the summer months, has been closed indefinitely pending an “upturn in the aviation industry”.
The Chairman of Fermanagh District Council, Robin Martin, said: “After careful consideration the Council has decided to ‘mothball’ St Angelo airport”. He said the decision had been reached after a number of factors had been taken into account. A consultant’s report had found that attempting to establish a service between St Angelo and a Belfast airport would be unlikely to succeed. The report noted that the traffic that was using the airport was seasonal and was “insufficient to warrant the airport’s continued operation.”
A spokesperson for the council said that there were no plans to dispose of the property, and that the premises would be “mothballed” and the facilities kept in good condition.
Previously a WWII Royal Naval air base, St Angelo had been used in recent years by Cross Air for weekly flights to Zurich and by Mersk for flights to Jersey.
Three miles from the historic town of Enniskillen, the airport had also been used to stage air shows in the summer months for tourists in the Fermanagh Lakeland area.

Object Found At St Angelo Airport Not Explosive
A suspect object found at St Angelo Airport in Enniskillen on Monday evening was "nothing untoward" according to police. Army bomb experts removed the object which was found on a plane registered in England but based at At Angelo. No further information was reported.
