Tourism body gives Derry a boost at Dublin event

Tourism representatives from the Derry Visitor and Convention Bureau (DVCB) will be promoting the city of Derry, Northern Ireland’s second largest city at the Holiday World Exhibition in Dublin this week.

The Dublin holiday exhibition - which runs from 24-27 January – will see staff from the Derry Visitor and Convention Bureau hoping to entice tourists to visit Derry - and to encourage tourism on the whole to Northern Ireland’s North West.

Catherine O’Connor, Manager of DVCB, said: “On the tourism front, things are certainly looking up with an increasing number of visitors coming to the city each year. The tourism industry for the city generates over £17 million into the local economy.

“In just thirty minutes of departing Dublin Airport you can reach an area that is probably Ireland’s best kept secret. There are a host of experiences in Derry and Letterkenny that the visitor can choose from. Whether it’s history, entertainment, golf, fishing, blue-flag beaches, the countryside, its all there in a simple package.”

New tourism developments in the city that will be promoted include the newly refurbished Best Western White Horse Hotel at Campsie, the introduction of river cruises and the Millennium Forum, which recently hosted the premiere of Director Paul Greengrass’s Bloody Sunday.

Mrs O’Connor said: “Derry offers something for everyone and is renowned for its exuberant ‘pub culture’ which has proven to be a major attraction for an ever-growing number of younger tourists.

“Whoever you are, wherever you come from, whether in Derry for a weekend break or a business trip, you’ll find a warm welcome.” (AMcE)
