Tollymore Gorse Fire Sets Mountain Ablaze
A large gorse fire in a scenic area of Co Down has provoked an appeal by a local politician.
SDLP leader and South Down Westminster candidate Margaret Ritchie has asked for anyone with information about a gorse fire at Tollymore Forest Park to pass it to the police immediately.
She made her call after firefighters eventually brought under control an extensive gorse fire in the Mourne Mountains.
Sixty acres of gorse were ablaze on Saturday evening on the edge of Slievenabrock mountain above Tollymore Forest Park.
Thirteen fire engines and 65 firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze, working in conjunction with the Forestry Service.
The SDLP leader said: "Unfortunately, these types of fires have been all too common in recent times. Although the cause of the fire has yet to be established, the fact is, gorse fires place strain on our local economy, pressure on our emergency services and damage our environment as they rage through our areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Large Gorse Fire Ongoing In Newcastle
Firefighters are tackling an ongoing large gorse fire in Newcastle. According to reports, eight fire engines and almost 50 firefighters are at the scene in the Drinahilly Mountain area near Tollymore Forest Park. It is understood that some 10 acres of gorse are affected by the fire. Specialist wildfire officers are also at the scene.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) has released an appeal to the public following the first gorse fires of the year. NIFRS is asking people to think about the consequences of deliberate fire setting in the countryside and mountains. The Service received 548 emergency calls relating to gorse fires in the first 7 days of April alone.

Fire crews have tackled almost 600 gorse fires in the past week and a number of them have been started deliberately. Temperatures are rising to around 30 degrees in Northern Ireland which is making the ground extremely dry.
