Derry technology company to create 100 jobs
A technology software development centre at the University of Ulster’s Science Park facilities in Derry has announced plans to create up to 100 jobs.
The company, 8over8, which was offered Selective Financial Assistance of £815,000 by Industrial Development Board (IDB) towards the project, made the announcement on Thursday January 17.
Announcing the investment on Thursday January 17, Sir Reg Empey said: “This announcement, following on from the jobs boost provided by Northbrook at Christmas and coupled with the growing cluster of companies in the North West, greatly enhances Northern Ireland’s reputation as a rapidly developing centre of excellence in one of the most dynamic international industries – e business.
“It sends the strongest possible message to the global industry that Northern Ireland is a world class business location.
CEO of 8over8, Clare Colhoun, commenting on the investment, added: “Derry is an ideal location for us because of the availability of software graduates from the Magee Campus and the University's overall commitment to working with local companies on leading-edge technologies. The University of Ulster’s Science Park facilities here in Magee have proved an excellent start-up site for our business.”
Welcoming the announcement Professor Chris Barnett, Chief Executive of the University of Ulster Science Research Parks said: “The University of Ulster is delighted at the news of this major investment.
“Over the last 12 months we have seen the rapid and highly successful development of the Science Research Park at the Magee Campus, confirming our commitment to establish the North-West as an internationally recognised centre of excellence for the ICT sector. The University continues to deliver on its mission to be an 'outstanding regional university' driving the development of the knowledge-based economy in Northern Ireland.” (AMcE)

Additional Funding Announced For STEM

Minister Reacts To Teachers' Union Ballot Threat
Education Minister Paul Givan has responded to the announcement by several teachers' unions that they plan to ballot their members for industrial action over 2024/25 pay. Earlier this year, the Minister provided funding to successfully resolve the long-running industrial dispute over teachers' pay for 2021-24.
