Belfast Blitz Recalled

The WWII Easter Blitz will be recalled next week as a north Belfast community remembers the horrific death toll as German bombers left their mark on the city on the night of Easter Tuesday, 15 April 1941.

Two hundred Luftwaffe bombers attacked the city and nearly 1,000 people died with even more being injured.

The Friends of Grove Park Festival will be launched on May Day, Monday 3rd May at with an official opening ceremony by local DUP MEP. Diane Dodds.

The launch will commence with a poignant balloon launch to remember the casualties from both sides of the community and how it impacted especially on the community in north Belfast as the German bombers swept across the heavily industrialised city.

The festival will then be open to the public and include a replica wartime kitchen set up outside the Pavilion on Monday and a variety of other contemporary exhibits.

The War Years Remembered part of the event is a static display of historical artefacts from both World Wars to include WWII vehicles, uniforms, medals, deactivated weapons and posters.

Entrance to the exhibition is free and it will also include reference to the contribution of the Polish forces during WWII.
