Last year’s GCSE grade errors remain unexplained
Mystery still surrounds the reason for almost 1,000 pupils getting the wrong GCSE home economics results last August.
A report undertaken by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) into the mix up said they could not identify precisely how the problem arose.
The Education Minister, Martin McGuinness and the Assembly Education Committee received the final report by the CCEA on the grading errors on Thursday January 10.
Commenting on the report Mr McGuinness said: “I have followed closely developments throughout this investigation, and am confident that it has been carried out in a meticulous manner. The investigation has revealed control weaknesses in the processing of examination results and a number of recommendations have been made to address these.”
The Minister said that it was “imperative that the lessons learned from this incident are implemented and the importance of robust computer systems is recognised”. He added: “I am confident CCEA will take the steps necessary before the next series of examinations to ensure that the distress caused to pupils, parents and teaching staff, will not be repeated.” (AMcE)

CCEA set up exam helpline
Northern Ireland’s exams body, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA), has set up a special helpline service to support anxious students and parents awaiting GCE, GCSE and A and AS Level exam results, which are due to be released over the next few weeks.

Just Over 40 Appeals Issued Over A-Level And GCSE Grades
Just over 40 appeals have been lodged in the last six days following this year’s A-Level and GCSE results in Northern Ireland. This is a drop from 1,687 appeals in 2020 and 1,926 in 2019, in six days.

GCSE Results On The Rise In NI
Around 30,000 students across Northern Ireland have received their GCSE results today, 23 August, resulting in a 0.7% rise in passing grades A*-C. Approximately 81.1% of NI GCSE entries secured passing grades with around 10% receiving the top A* grade. The performance gap widened between boys and girls with 85.

Alliance 'Deeply Concerned' Over Pace Of HIA Redress Scheme
The Alliance Party has raised concerns over the rate of progress on the redress scheme for Historical Institutional Abuse of children. The party's Executive Office spokesperson, Paula Bradshaw MLA, has called on the First and deputy First Minister (FMdFM) must meet victims and survivors urgently over memorialisation and other issues.
