Fine Follows Double Dog Attack
A Newtownabbey man has been fined in court and ordered to pay £500 compensation after his two dogs attacked and injured a seven-year-old boy.
Gareth Bullen, from Carnreagh Bend, was fined £300 at Belfast Magistrates Court and ordered to pay costs of £69 for the offence on July 27, 2009. Mr Bullen was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to the injured party.
The court heard how a German Shepherd and Boxer dog belonging to Mr Bullen had attacked and injured the child at Oakley Street in north Belfast last year.
The District Judge also issued a confinement order meaning the dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled at all times when out in public.
A council spokeswoman said: "Belfast City Council adopts an extremely robust approach to the investigation and prosecution, where appropriate, of each and every reported dog attack as it is our commitment to protect the health and safety of the public."
In a separate case, an east Belfast man was fined £30 and ordered to pay costs of £66 for allowing his dog to stray.
The dog was found straying at the Holywood Road on March 4, this year.

Hero Army Dog Handlers Honoured
Murdered soldiers who worked with specialist 'sniffer' dogs during the Northern Ireland Troubles have been remembered. The 'Red Paw' and its work across Northern Ireland was the subject of a special memorial service held in England at the weekend. It was in honour of the six dog handlers and two sniffer dogs killed in Northern Ireland.

Dog Attack Leaves Young Boy In Hospital
A young boy is receiving treatment in hospital after he was attacked by a dog in County Tyrone. Police said the incident happened in the village of Sion Mills on Sunday 11 August. The youngster was left shaken by the dog attack, which is understood to have been the second in the area in just two weeks. The dog warden has been informed.

Sentences Imposed For Separate Belfast Dog Attacks
Two individuals were sentenced at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday for separate dog attacks which injured either a person or animal. Mark McLaughlin of Prospect Park, Belfast, was convicted following an incident on March 29, 2024 in which his Collie-Husky cross attacked and injured a 3 year-old boy on the face and forehead at Prospect Park.

A man has been fined £100 and ordered to pay £200 compensation after his dog attacked and injured a woman. Stephen Thompson, from Dunraven Park in east Belfast, was also ordered to pay costs of £66 in relation to the incident, which happened on the Beersbridge Road on December 25, 2010. Three other dog owners were also fined in court.

A 'Staffie' dog attack has landed a Belfast man in court. He was fined £200 and ordered to pay £300 compensation after his dog attacked and injured a man last December. Robert Gary Bradshaw, from Orkney Street in west Belfast, was convicted of the offence at Belfast Magistrates Court today and was also ordered to pay costs of £69.
