Stormont Cuts Stalled
Sinn Fein and DUP politicians are at loggerheads over an agreed Assembly budget. DUP leader and First Minister Peter Robinson and the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness have each sent out contradictory messages on the timing of a finance deal and Mr McGuinness's fellow republicans have now criticised DUP Finance Minister Sammy Wilson for his insistence that a deal is long overdue. However, cross-party talks on agreeing a budget are being held behind the scenes at Stormont after the £4 billion cuts ordered by Chancellor George Osborne, but, there's still very little sign of a deal. PUP Goes DUP
A former Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) councillor and ex loyalist prisoner has joined the DUP. Tommy Sandford is a spokesman for the Cregagh Community Association and was a PUP councillor for the Castlereagh Central area between 2001 and 2005. Welcoming Mr Sandford, East Belfast Constituency Chairman Lord Browne said: "Tommy is a well known figure in east Belfast, and particularly in the Cregagh area where he is active in the local community association. I have no doubt that he will be a great asset to the Democratic Unionist Party and has responded to the strategy and leadership displayed most obviously by the party Leader Peter Robinson." Mr Sandford is a former UVF associate of Gusty Spence and the late David Ervine and left the party over its link with the loyalist paramilitary group.
Duffy Trail Adjourned
The prominent republican Colin Duffy will have to wait until tomorrow to see if he will stand trial for the murder of two soldiers at Massereene barracks after his case was adjourned on Tuesday. Jobs On Screen
Antrim Omniplex Cinemas is to create 60 full and part time jobs after the largest cinema chain in Northern Ireland signed a deal to open a new multiscreen cinema at Junction One Retail and Leisure Park in early summer 2011. Representing an investment of over £3 million the new complex will create up to 60 full and part time jobs. The all-digital cinema complex will comprise 10 screens with a capacity of 1,300, state of the art stadium seating throughout and concession areas selling freshly made popcorn, drinks and confectionery.
