The Stormont Social Development Minister Alex Attwood has today launched a new advertising campaign to help separated families make effective maintenance arrangements for their children. Child Maintenance Choices will help parents by providing free confidential information and support. There will be a free telephone number and a text number. Separated parents can choose what maintenance arrangements are best suited for their children. Lonely Pensioners In Focus
A new Belfast Central Mission (BCM) initiative aimed at alleviating the loneliness of older people in Belfast and outlying areas has been launched by Councillor Pat Convery, Lord Mayor of Belfast. Some 39% of older people in Northern Ireland live alone - with many not having close family alive, or living near them. Others are too infirm to venture out to socialise in the community, and having a befriender call with them is often their only point of contact with the outside world. The befriending scheme entitled 'Loneliness - one hour of my time made the difference', is a cross-community initiative. BCM are now seeking more volunteers of any age who are prepared to give one hour of their time regularly to visit an older, isolated person.
East Belfast Violence Condemned
Robin Newton East Belfast, the DUP MLA said that it is deeply depressing to learn of another violent robbery in the east of the city resulting in a man's head being smashed through a car window. "It is worrying that the thugs engaged in these robberies are prepared to carry out violence that could result in the innocent victim losing their life. With the good descriptions the victim provided to the police there is every chance the thugs will be caught. It is important the whole community assists the police to take these sadistic brutes off the streets," he said, condemning the robbery.
Pollution Fine In Tyrone
A Co Tyrone Company was fined £12,500 plus £37 court costs at Omagh Magistrates' Court last week. McAnenly Quarries Ltd, of Spring Road, Drumnakilly, Carrickmore, Co Tyrone was fined for making a polluting discharge to a waterway. On 30 January 2009, following a report of pollution, a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, inspected the Drumnakilly River and observed a sandy plume upstream of Drumnakilly Bridge where the waterway was discoloured and silty. The source of the polluting discharge was traced to a quarry at Spring Road, Drumnakilly, owned by McAnenly Quarries Ltd. A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
