UTV Partners NI Government Channel

UTV has teamed up with the Stormont Executive to bring a new TV 'station' to NI computer screens.

First Minister, Peter Robinson and the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness launched the new information service on the popular nidirect website.

It features a series of short instructional videos produced in conjunction with Ulster Television (UTV) with information and advice on a broad range of subjects.

Speaking at the launch at UTV headquarters, Mr Robinson said: "The nidirect website has grown steadily since its launch and is now the website of choice for government information and services.

"The launch of nidirect tv represents a new and innovative venture, which would not have been possible without the support and expertise of UTV.

"The fact that they have done this at no cost to Government is laudable and I sincerely thank them," he said.

"This suite of short films will be a major addition to the way that information is presented to the public and presents users with a choice in terms of how they access information," the DUP Minister explained.

Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness said: "nidirect is different from other departmental websites. It is a one-stop virtual information shop at which users can find it all they need in one place.

"The (original) site has attracted over three million visits since its launch in April 2009. The Internet and social networking is a vital and growing aspect of all our lives, the Executive through nidirect recognises this and strives to meet the information needs of our people."

Jeremy Biggerstaff, Managing Director UTV New Media said: "We are delighted to partner with nidirect to show the powerful impact video can have online.

"These short programmes filmed by UTV illustrate simply and effectively key nidirect services that affect our everyday lives whether it's going for an MOT or preparing for Digital switchover. We trust local people will find these programmes a very practical and helpful addition to the nidirect website."

The new facility, nidirect tv is online player available on: www.nidirect.gov.uk/tv
