Gunman Robs East Belfast Off-Licence
The east Belfast area has again been hit by an armed robbery with news that a man armed with a handgun has held-up an off-licence.
He went into the shop on the Upper Newtownards Road, threatened two employees and demanded money on Wednesday night.
The incident has been condemned by the Alliance party's East Belfast MLA Chris Lyttle, who said: "I am shocked and angry that the lives and well being of two members of staff in this shop were threatened by this robber.
"I hope that the members of staff caught up in this incident are able to quickly get over what must have been a traumatic ordeal.
"There have been a large number of robberies in East Belfast in the past year and I will be looking to the PSNI to ensure that resources are allocated to tackling this type of crime.
"I would urge anybody with any information about this robbery to contact the police. This man must be apprehended by the police quickly and brought before the courts," he said, yesterday.
The PSNI said the robber was described as being in his 40s, and between 5ft 10 and 6ft tall and said that he ran off after stealing cash.
He was wearing a black leather jacket, a grey hooded top with the hood up, black gloves and had a black scarf covering his face.
Just a week ago, an alleged robber was shot dead after being confronted by an off-duty police officer in the same area.
Identified as 29-year-old Marc Alexander Ringland - he was shot and fatally wounded shortly after 7pm last Thursday night by the armed officer at a garage forecourt on the Albertbridge Road.
The dead man - who had a long record of criminal activity - was alleged to have been armed with a knife - and was also said in reports last night to have been repeatedly warned to put the weapon down after threatening a member of staff.
