Job Cut Fears In Kerry And Cork
There are fears for the future of almost 200 jobs in Cork and Kerry.
US health insurance provider Aetna, a leading healthcare company providing medical insurance to more than 18m people, has said it is reviewing its operation at Castleisland, Co Kerry.
Aetna has already delivered redundancy notices to 200 staff at its headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut, as well as in Florida, Dubai, Hong Kong, Seattle and Shanghai.
The company has had an office at Castleisland for almost 15 years, processing members' claims and providing customer service.
101 of the 106 staff there have been told that their positions are also under review. A decision on whether they are to be made redundant is due to be taken within the next month.
The Cork Medical Centre, a private hospital opened just five months ago at Mahon in the city, is to suspend operations immediately for at least a month, and 75 staff there are being laid off.
Employees were told they are being laid off until the hospital reopens.
The closure follows an announcement by health insurer VHI that it will not provide cover for treatments at the hospital.
