Job Losses Announced At Royal Mail
It has been announced that a number of jobs are to go at Royal Mail in Northern Ireland as part of a UK-wide plan to reduce management numbers.
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said it was too early to say how many employees will be affected locally.
Consultations with the union Unite/CMA are to begin with the company expecting to shed 1,000 operational line manager jobs through voluntary means.
The company say they have reduced the number of employees by around 65,000 since 2002.
The latest financial results for Royal Mail Group have shown a 72% fall in operating profits to £52million in the first half of the 2010-2011 financial year (to the end of September 2010), compared to the same period a year earlier when the figure was £184million.
The largest part of the group - the Royal Mail Letters business - also made a £66million operating loss during the first half of the current year.
Managing Director of Operations and Modernisation, Mark Higson, commented: "Royal Mail's modernisation programme, which is vital to ensuring a successful future for the letters and parcels business, depends on having the right number of people in our business as well as deploying the right technology and equipment.
"We are conscious of the impact today's announcement will have on our staff in London. It is hard to reduce job numbers at any time; we are committed to doing everything we can, in line with our agreement with the union, to make these changes on a voluntary basis. We will be providing specialist outplacement advice to help our people affected by this announcement to look for new opportunities outside Royal Mail."
