Crematorium Recruits Staff To Meet Demand
Belfast City Council is to extend opening hours at its Co Down Roselawn Crematorium to allow for more cremations to take place.
The Council has agreed to hire extra staff as the current waiting time for such funerals is working out at about eight days.
The findings of a review into the situation were presented to the Council in Belfast City Hall on Tuesday night when a vote in favour of recruiting extra staff and extending opening hours was passed.
The changes will double the number of cremations here.
Cremations already account for just under a fifth of all funerals in Northern Ireland with current staffing levels at Roselawn described as "totally inadequate to meet the demand".
The Parks and Leisure Committee found some funerals were delayed so much because of the poor staffing levels that caused "additional distress to bereaved families".
It was agreed to employ five additional members of staff.
The review was undertaken because the Crematorium currently is operating at full capacity, and it is anticipated that the number of people choosing cremation - 18% in Northern Ireland, compared to 74% in the rest of the United Kingdom - will continue to rise in the future.
It is envisaged that the changes will be in place by the end of September, at the latest.
