Shorts confirm job cuts in wake of terror attack
Aircraft manufacturers Shorts has confirmed that it has cut around 250 jobs as part of a strategic cost-cutting strategy aimed at improving the firm’s efficiency.
The job cuts have affected sub-contractors on part-time or temporary contracts, due to a lessening of demand for overtime workers. The extra employees were initially contracted following a rise in production that has now decreased. In addition, the impact of the recent terror attacks has yet to be assessed by the company, who are currently liaising with their clients as to the potential effects on the firm’s manpower requirements. A spokesperson added: “As soon as we know that, we will be consulting with our employees.”
Shorts currently employs around 7,500 workers but only around 300 of which are directly involved in the assembly of aircraft sections for US company Boeing – which has announced severe cutbacks in its workforce following the events of the past fortnight. (CL)
