Doctors’ registration details placed online

For the first time members of the public will have ready access to doctor’s registration status to check if a doctor is properly licensed to practise medicine in the UK.

Patients and health officials can now check if a doctor is one of the 200,000 qualified doctors listed by the General Medical Council (GMC) who oversee the right to practice medicine in the UK.

The GMC list which is available on the internet will be updated daily and will help allay concerns about doctors’ qualifications.

Health authorities seeking to employ doctors are also expected to use the service, which may be found at www.gmc-uk.org, to verify that doctors are properly licensed to practice. (SP)
