Aras Candidates Rule Out Transfer Pact
Irish presidential candidates Michael D Higgins and Martin McGuinness have spoken out about vote 'transfer pacts' saying at this stage they would not express a preference for any other candidate.
The candidates ruled out any such transfer pact with others during RTE's Morning Ireland programme today.
Speaking first Mr Higgins said that there was no such arrangements or discussions going on.
Mr Higgins said: "I'm running my own campaign and I think I'm doing quite well.
"Obviously I welcome, and I think I'll need, transfers from every other candidate."
Yesterday Higgins said he "wouldn't be against" a transfer pact with Independent Senator David Norris in the election.
While he said there had been no formal discussions with Mr Norris, he indicated he would not be against the idea.
After leading the polls until recently, Mr Higgins has now fallen behind independent candidate Seán Gallagher.
Meanwhile also discussing the transfer pact McGuinness said he had ruled out a pact altogether: "I think at this stage as we approach the election it would be very foolish for any candidate to express a preference for any other candidate."
When asked if he ruled out a pact, he said: "I do, yeah."
There is just under a week of campaigning left and today the candidates will continue their campaign in a last push for votes. The candidates will also have their final televised debate next Monday.
