Multiple Witnesses For Waterside Murder Case

Some 15 people have come forward as witnesses to the fatal stabbing of a 56-year-old man in the Waterside area of Londonderry on Sunday morning.

Father-of-two Chris McGaughey from Celadine Court in Gobnascale died from stab wounds at Hollymount Park at 1am on Sunday.

Detectives are holding a 31-year-old man in connection with the killing, and have now been granted a 36-hour extension to continue their questioning.

Thirteen witnesses to the killing have now come forward.

A woman was also taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries following the fatal attack.

SDLP councillor Gerard Diver said the Gobnascale community is in shock over the killing.

Mr Diver said: "I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and close friends of the victim, they have to deal with a situation that every family dreads," he said.

He continued, "People are shocked and saddened at this awful news. "I urge anybody with information to bring it to the police."

Local priest Fr Michael Canny said the victim was well known in the area and said people were devastated by the incident.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
