'Happy Birthday' Says Ford
The NI Justice Minister David Ford has acknowledged the unprecedented changes that have taken place within policing over the past 10 years. Marking the anniversary of the creation of the Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI), the Minister said that the service can be proud of what it has achieved over the past decade. "Co-operation and support from the local community has been a key to the PSNI's success and continues to be vital. This is not always straightforward, but both the PSNI and the community are continuing to develop better connections and address historic perceptions. While much progress has been made, more remains to be done. I know that the PSNI recognise this and that is why they are determined to be a Police Service that is part of the community, that reflects the community and that seeks to police with and within the community," he said.
Newcastle Benefit Fraud
A man was convicted at Downpatrick Crown court last week for claiming benefits he was not entitled to. Thomas Garvey (56) of Slievecorragh Avenue, Newcastle claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £37,389 while failing to declare capital. He was given 240 hours community service and fined £2,500. He will also have to repay any money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
Ethnic Voices
The Stormont Junior Minister Martina Anderson has urged people from ethnic minorities to make their voices heard. She was speaking at the launch of a new booklet entitled 'Awakening the Silent Voice', which was published by the Omagh Ethnic Communities Support Group. The booklet highlights a number of issues of concern to the Chinese and Indian communities in Omagh. These include access to care, language barriers and racism. It aims to encourage participation, at a local level, to ensure ethnic communities have access to the services they are entitled to. "We need to address the concerns raised in this booklet. We also continue to support organisations through our Ethnic Minority Development Fund," she said, adding that: "It is vital that we work together for a better and shared future. A future where everyone has access to the services they are entitled to, are respected and there is an end to the blight of racism."
Caravan Laws Tightened
New legislation to protect the rights of caravan owners has become fully operational with the introduction of Part II of the Caravans Act (Northern Ireland) 2011. By now, all holiday caravan park owners in Northern Ireland should have issued written agreements to all caravan owners renting holiday pitches on their sites. The primary aim of Part II of the Act is to introduce clarity and transparency in the terms of the agreements allowing caravan owners to station caravans on holiday parks. The Act provides caravan owners with increased protection including the right to a written contract and to have a greater say in how their caravan site is run.
