Policing cash boost in the advent of police reform package

With the publication of the controversial RUC reform package details expected later this week the Secretary of State Dr John Reid has announced an additional £10 million in police resources.

The cash boost, announced on Thursday August 16 will take effect immediately and comes ahead of the expected publication later this week outlining how police reform will be implemented in the province. The cash boost brings the total police budget to £645 million for the current financial year.

The announcement comes on the back of controversy over the policing implementation plan which is expected later this week. The document is expected to detail the changes to be made to the Royal Ulster Constabulary as it undergoes change into the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The announcement also comes after a government report on Tuesday, which warned of the pressures that could face the new scaled down Police Service of Northern Ireland when it begins operating.

Dr Reid said: “I am aware of the financial pressures currently facing the police service. I am determined that the police should have the resources they need to do the job.”

He said that as a result with his discussions with the Chief constable and the police Authority he decided to immediately provide an additional £10 million for policing this year in order to” cope with the short term pressure.”

The Chief Constable Sir Ronnie Flanagan has welcomed the announcement: “I am pleased this allocation has been made. It reflects, as I expected it would, the government’s commitment to the properly resourcing of policing. I have every confidence that when additional funding is required that we will provide well argued business cases as we have done and will continue to do.”

A further £102 million, covering the 2003/4 period has already been allocated to implement the recommendations arising from the Patten Report, which excludes the cost of the voluntary severance scheme, which is funded separately.

Dr Reid added: “Thursday’s additional payment will ease the current pressure on the police budget and I remain committed to ensuring that the police have the resources they need to do a difficult job.” (AMcE)
