DUP calls for inquiry into false passports used by IRA suspects
Democratic Unionist MP Iris Robinson has demanded an investigation into how two of the three men detained in Columbia were able to travel on false British passports.
The anti-Agreement MP for Strangford said it was vital to establish how the men had fraudulently obtained British passports through the passport agency.
She said: “If an IRA bomber can obtain a fake passport, which to most people, including an election official looks totally genuine, how many more republicans hold similar false documents. How many fake ID’s have been manufactured by republicans in order to abuse the electoral system or deceive other government departments?”
Mrs Robinson, who is the wife of DUP deputy leader Peter Robinson, said she required an explanation from the Secretary of State John Reid as to how the men obtained official documents and how safe the current form of passport was from falsification.
Mr Robinson added that the timely arrest of three men in Columbia had confirmed to the unionist community the peace process was a fraud. (AMcE)
