Reid condemns Ealing bombing
The Secretary of State, Dr John Reid has condemned the car bomb attack in West London, in a statement released before his before his meeting with pro-Agreement parties to discuss revised implementation plan on police reform.
Speaking in Hillsborough, Dr Reid said: "This was another attempt by extremists to derail the peace process. It has been carried out by people who have no democratic mandate and who are defying the clear will of the people in Ireland, North and South. My thoughts are with those who were injured in the attack and their families."
He said that the bomb attack achieved “no purpose other than to remind people of what we are trying to escape from.”
In an appeal to the parties who are considering the governments’ peace package unveiled on Wednesday 1 August Dr Reid said: “As the Prime Minister has said dialogue is the only way forward. The proposals put to the parties on Wednesday offer the possibility of real progress. Far from deflecting us, last night's barbaric attack should strengthen our resolve to reach agreement.
"No-one will understand if we allow the solution that is within our grasp to slip away."
Most of the comments made to date on the peace package indicate that the governments’ efforts to produce a blueprint to achieve a way forward in the peace process have been futile.
The political parties who wish to make official comment on the package have until Monday 6 August.
