Minister outlines next stage of Investing for Health
Health Minister Bairbre de Brún MLA has described the ‘Investing for Health’ consultation as the start of ‘a long journey’ to improve the health of people throughout Northern Ireland which should reap immense future rewards.
The Minister was speaking at a presentation ceremony for the winners of the ‘Picture of Health?’ photographic competition, organised as part of the initiative. The competition, which aimed to get people to represent what health means to them, saw Drumbo teenager Jamie Trimble receive a prize of £1,000 for his entry which was awarded first place.
The ‘Investing for Health’ consultation exercise was launched on 30 November 2000, run on behalf of the Ministerial Group by the Community Development and Health Network, who also organised the photographic competition. It aimed to give as many people as possible a voice in shaping the policies relating to the numerous issues with affect health, but which do not involve doctors or hospitals.
Outlining the next stage of ‘Investing for Health’, Ms de Brún said: "Following the consultation, we are now drawing up a plan for action which we will publish later this year on behalf of the Ministerial Group on Public Health, representing all government departments.
"This will set up to 10 high level targets for action to improve our health, increase the number of years people can expect to live free from disease, illness or disability, and reduce inequalities in health between population groups." (CL)
