Province sees spate of overnight fires

Police are investigating a spate of overnight fires throughout the province that have caused extensive damage to a school and a church in Belfast.

A set of curtains in the gym at St Oliver Plunkett School on the Glen Road caught fire, causing scorch damage to the surrounding area. It is believed that the fire was started deliberately, following the discovery of a number of broken windows at the building.

Meanwhile, a fire has destroyed the roof of St Donard’s Church on the Bloomfield Road. Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at around 10.45am, following the sighting of flames around the top of the building. While the conflagration was brought under control by midday, the interior of the church suffered extensive damage, and police have not ruled out foul play.

Bangor Marina was the location for another fire, which destroyed a carousel and damaged caravans, dodgems and a mobile generator. While no-one was injured in the blaze, which happened at around 3.30am on Wednesday 1 August, the fire spread quickly due to oil from the vehicle-mounted portable generator. The fairground will now close after 26 years of operation, and police are treating the case as suspected arson. (CL)
