Golfing greats descend on Royal County Down

Thursday marked the opening day of this year’s Senior British Open at Royal County Down.

The Open, which was first played in 1987, is the premier event on the PGA European Senior Tour which has been supported by many of the legendary golfing superstars from the past including Gary Player and Arnold Palmer.

Gary Player of course is one of the favourites to collect this year’s £79,000 prize alongside another of the game’s greats Jack Nicklaus. Player is also no stranger to winning the title having achieved victory no less than three times in the past.

However, both men will be up against stiff opposition including favourite, Denis O’Sullivan who has won two of the last three seniors tournaments in Germany and Sweden.

O'Sullivan's presence is expected to be even more significant given that Christy O'Connor Jnr will be unable to defend his title as he is recovering from a broken leg. (MB)
