Disabled man escapes injury in pipe bomb attack

A disabled man has narrowly escaped injury in an overnight pipe bomb attack on a house in the Derriaghy area in Co Antrim.

The attack on the house in Barnfield Grange, Dunmurry, took place at around 2.45am on Monday 23 July, when a device thrown at the front of the building exploded, shattering glass in the front door and causing smoke damage to the hall. British army bomb disposal expert were called in to investigate, and found the remains of a small pipe bomb which was removed for further examination.

Meanwhile, a pipe bomb left outside a Catholic family home in Coleraine has been defused, following its discovery early on Sunday morning on the doorstep of a house on the Kylemore Road. The surrounding area was evacuated as army bomb experts made the device safe. It is believed the pipe bomb was thrown at the house during Saturday night, but police said that while the device had been lit, the fuse burnt itself out before the bomb could explode.

In a later incident on Monday 23 July, houses in the Clarence Court area of Coleraine were evacuated following the discovery of a suspicious object, which was later declared a hoax. (CL)
