RUC STATION ATTACKED IN CASTLEWELLAN

An explosion has occurred at an RUC station in Castlewellan, County Down and up to six shots were also reported to have been fired during the incident.

On Friday an Army Technical Officer began an examination of the scene of the explosion which happened at about 11pm on Thursday 19 July.

The RUC said that they feared that there could be other unexploded devices in the area. A police spokesman added that the attack happened in a residential area and has left a lot of elderly people extremely frightened.

There were no reports of anyone being hurt or any damage being caused to the station, which was unmanned at the time of the incident.

SDLP assembly member Eamon O’Neill, who lives opposite the police station, said that it could have been carried out by paramilitaries opposed to the peace process. (CD)
