Former RUC Man Appointed To Justice Committee
An ex-RUC man has been appointed as chair to the assembly committee for the transfer of policing and justice powers.
Jimmy Spratt, a former RUC officer and now South Belfast MLA, accepted the nomination by Ian Paisley Snr to the Executive Review Committee.
He will replace Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson as the committee chairperson following Mr Donaldson's appointment as a junior minister.
It is thought MLA's will likely further postpone the transfer of powers by the British Government. The original deadline for the transfer was May, but the new appointment is thought to strengthen the side of MLA's who believe not enough cross party support exists to allow the transfer to go through.
Mr Spratt was a policeman for 30 years, serving in Belfast and Londonderry and as a member of the close protection unit to Northern Ireland Office ministers, MPs and Chief Constables.
Prior to entering front line politics, he was best known as a former chairman of the Police Federation.
