Another textiles loss for Fermanagh
NORTHERN IRELAND’S textiles sector has received another blow following the decision by Coats Viyella to close its factory in Lisnaskea.
The news follows a series of meetings held by company management last month, to discuss the viability of the Fermanagh site. While the Transport and General Workers union had expressed hopes that some sort of resolution could be found, a decision was made to close the factory, with the immediate loss of 140 jobs. Around 30 other employees will stay on at the site until the factory’s eventual closure in September of this year.
Minister for Social Development, Maurice Morrow, described the move as ‘a body blow’ for the area’s rural community, already hard-hit by other recent cut-backs in the textiles industry. "The impact of the loss of 200 jobs in a small town like Lisnaskea should not be underestimated," he added.
Coats Viyella say they are no longer able to successfully compete in the current uncertain international marketplace. (CL)
