LOCAL PROTESTORS HEAD TO G8 CONFERENCE

A group of peaceful protestors from the province are to travel to Genoa this weekend as part of a ‘drop the debt’ campaign aimed at exposing the burden of debt carried by third world countries.

The G8 summit, which will take place in Genoa on July 20-22, will see finance ministers and heads of state from the world's leading industrialised nations meeting to discuss issues including the current system of loan provision and repayment strategies affecting some of the world's poorest countries

The group of local activists - which includes teachers, civil servants and student – are travelling to Italy to help publicise how the crippling amounts of interest paid by such nations is adversely affecting their populations, with an estimated 19,000 children dying every day as a result of poor living conditions caused by imposed financial demands.

Protects have already happened ahead of this weekend’s summit, with further solidarity events to take place in both Belfast and Dublin this Saturday.

Representatives from the G8 nations have met annually since 1975 to address the major economic and political issues facing their nations and the international community as a whole. (CL)
