RUC TO RECEIVE NECESSARY POLICE RESOURCES
THE Royal Ulster Constabulary is expected to receive the resources highlighted in the organisation’s annual report as necessary for the policing of Northern Ireland.
The announcement was made by Lord Falconer of Thoroton who said the Government remained committed to ensuring the RUC had all the resources necessary to continue to deliver a high-quality policing service to the local community.
However, the announcement was made as the British government revealed a £117 million budget shortfall over the next three years.
In his annual report, Chief Constable Ronnie Flanagan highlighted his own shortfall of around £20 million for this financial year and a further £97 million over the following two years.
Speaking at Minister’s question time Lord Falconer said: “Ministers are aware of the Chief Constable`s views and officials are continuing to discuss the issue with both the Chief Constable and the police authority.”
Tory frontbencher Lord Glentoran however warned that inadequate resources would lead to “ineffective policing”, and that the sums involved were small in comparison with the cost of any further concessions to Sinn Fein over policing.
When asked if there was enough money to fully implement the Patten proposals Lord Falconer said that the annual report did not deal with the issue concerning the funding of Patten. (MB)

£105m Announced For Leisure Facilities
Belfast City Council is planning a major renewal of its leisure facilities with a £105 million investment during the next 10 years. The plan includes a target of reducing its current £8 million annual subsidy of leisure services by £2 million with the aim of delivering high quality, value for money, 'best in class' leisure services for Belfast.
