BUILDING A COMMON GROUND FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
“IT is only by strengthening the links between the two communities on Ireland that we can build a common ground for our young people of today and tomorrow.”
This was the message from Dr Sean Farren, Minister for Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment, who was speaking at the Common Heritage of Ulster and Scotland – Language, History and Identity Conference, hosted by the University of Ulster at Magee Campus, Londonderry.
Dr Farren added: "On the conference title ‘Common Ground,’ I thought, not so much about the historic links of culture, language, tradition and movements of people which have existed for centuries and shaped life in Ulster and Scotland, but about the future for the two regions and particularly for our young people.
"The issues which concern and challenge us all are familiar to politicians and people in both parts of Ulster and Scotland: how to develop policy, plan for, fund and administer further and higher education in a fiercely competitive environment, with budgets which are never enough to meet all the needs or demands; how to help economic development and serve industry’s needs for up to the minute skills and at the same time help people find sustainable employment which meets their needs and aspirations.”
The Minister concluded by saying he wanted to see a culture of lifelong learning in Northern Ireland developed on the basis of equality of opportunity for all.
He said that he also wanted to see the promotion of wider access and greater participation in further and higher education, particularly from groups previously under-represented. (MB)
