Minister Announces Recruitment Of Staff For Primary Care

Minister Roisin Shortall T.D.,Minister of State with responsibility for Primary Care, announced at the Labour Party National Conference today that 300 staff would be recruited to work in Primary Care in the coming months.

A special allocation of €20 million was set aside as part of the HSE 2012 National Service Plan to fill posts in Primary Care.

Ms. Shortall said: "The HSE will shortly commence recruitment of key frontline staff for primary care teams. The funding will allow for the employment of public health nurses and other nurses to work in the primarycare setting, community physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and social workers."

The Minister said that at a time of scarce national resources it was important that such recruitments should be targeted at areas of greatest need.

"At this time of scarce national resources, it is essential that such posts will be allocated according to an objective assessment of needs. I want to ensure that an objective resource allocation system should determine all future staff allocations to Primary Care services. This hasn't been the case to date.

"The HSE is accordingly analysing the current provision of posts in proportion to population, population health needs, and medical card population to identify which areas are least well served. The 300 posts will then be allocated to the worst blackspots."

"Work is well underway on developing job descriptions and assembling interview panels and the posts will be advertised shortly."
