NEW IT CENTRE HELPS THOSE WITH DISABILITIES
A New IT communications suite that aims to introduce internet services and provide job training for those with physical disabilities was officially opened on Monday, June 18, by Dr Sean Farren.
The Minister for higher and Further Education, Training and Employment, Dr Sean Farren opened the vocational Training, Education and Communications Centre (CTEC), which is run by the Cedar Foundation, in Ballymena.
Dr Farren said: “One of my aims is to increase the training and employment opportunities available to people with disabilities, so that everyone in society can be allowed to fulfil their ambitions. In addition, the business community will benefit from the dedication, skill and enthusiasm that disabled people bring to the workplace.”
The Centre provides opportunities for trainees with physical disabilities to gain maximum access to new technologies such as e-mail, Internet and teleworking. The CTEC Centre will provide disabled people with a range of physical disabilities with the training they need in order to take up employment or education opportunities.
The Minister went on to commend the Cedar Foundation’s partnership approach to fundraising as a model of best practice which could be followed by other organisations in the voluntary and community sectors: “This partnership approach between Government, the private sector and voluntary groups is a worthy example of how that can be achieved.”
Dr Victor Patterson of the Cedar Foundation said: “We are delighted to be launching our second CTEC Centre which show the Cedar Foundation’s commitment to offering our trainees every opportunity to use the latest technology. These centres are made possible with the support of the Alpha Karten CTEC Trust and we are deeply indebted to this innovative Trust. I am also delighted that the Minister and the T&EA are lending their support to our work.” (AMcE)
