TRIMBLE APPEALS SINN FÉIN BAN RULING
FIRST Minister David Trimble has mounted an appeal in a bid to overturn the High Court judgement that the ban on Sinn Féin ministers attending cross-border meetings is illegal.
The High Court heard the appeal on Thursday June 14 and is now considering its judgement on the matter.
In January a judicial review found the ban to be illegal. Mr Trimble banned Sinn Féin minister from attending North/South ministerial meetings last November in an effort to further attempts to bring about IRA decommissioning.
However, despite the findings of the judicial review, Mr Trimble has been able to prevent Sinn Féin ministers from attending meetings by withholding nominations that he considered to be unsuitable.
As one of the main North/South political structures set up under the Good Friday Agreement, the Ministerial Council is considered to be of particular importance to nationalists.
Along with other cross-border bodies set up following the Good Friday Agreement, the North/South Council aims to further co-operation between the Northern Ireland Assembly and the Republic of Ireland Dail on areas of common concern. (SP)

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.
