Olympic Runner Brings Torch To NI Charity
WORLD class athlete and Irish Olympian Sonia O'Sullivan brought her Olympic torch at a County Down respite centre ahead of her triathlon challenge these weekend.
She and her daughter Sophie popped in for a bite to eat at the NI Cancer Fund for Children's Shimna Valley complex to learn about the £3m reconstruction taking place over the next year.
They caused a ripple of excitement by bringing the Olympic torch they had carried through Dublin.
The Olympic silver medalist is running the TriMonkstown Triathlon on Sunday (June 17) to raise funds for the charity, which provides practical and emotional support to children with cancer.
Following completion, the state-of-the-art home-from-home will be the first of its kind in Europe.
Ms O'Sullivan was also on hand to accept a cheque for 2000 euros on behalf of her good friend the cyclist Joe Barr.
Mr Barr embarked on his Race Across America challenge yesterday to raise funds for NICFC.
Sonia said she was inspired by Joe Barr and decided to join forces with him by taking part in various upcoming sporting competitions in order to raise funds.
She said: "This is a charity close to Joe's heart and one which made an incredible difference to his life when his baby son Ross was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Shimna Valley is such a beautiful and peaceful place - I can see how it would make such a significant difference to children with cancer and their families."

14 Cancer Charities Receive Grant Funding Totalling £7.95m
Fourteen cancer charities have received grant funding totalling £7.95 million, Health Minister Robin Swann has announced. The payments have been made through the Cancer Charities Support Fund, part of a £24m package of funding made available in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to support carers, cancer charities and mental health organisations.
