Peace One Day Concert, Ebrington Square, Preview

The stage is rigged and ready for a concert in next year's UK City of Culture.

Tickets to Derry/Londonderry's Peace One Day concert tonight (Thursday) were unexpectedly made free of charge less than a week ago when film producer Michael Hamlyn covered all the costs.

Thousands of people are expected to fill Ebrington Square for the concert, which marks the end of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Hollywood actor Jude Law will host the concert at the former army barracks

The venue's former parade ground was opened as a public square on Valentine’s Day last year and will be used for major events throughout next year’s City of Culture.

Pixie Lott, Newton Faulkner, the Guillemots and Imelda May are playing tonight alongside local band The Wondervillians.

The concert, which begins at 7.30pm, will be streamed live on the Peace One Day website – peaceoneday.org/concerts.

It is part of the run-up to an Elton John concert in Wembley for Peace Day on September 21.

In the three months between now and then, the Global Truce campaign, supported by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, will urge for a reduction of violence globally for one day a year, with the aim of beginning world peacebuilding realistically.

The Peace Day initiative began in 1999 as the brainchild of filmmaker and campaigner Jeremy Gilley.
