Sandy Row Artwork Has An Eye On The Past
A new artwork has been unveiled, highlighting the local history of Sandy Row and the surrounding area.
The 30-feet long art piece, by Belfast artist Ed Reynolds, runs along a wall in Stroud Street, bordering the adjoining St George's Gardens.
It includes various images relating to the history of the area, including famous faces such as snooker star Alex Higgins, singer Ruby Murray, footballer Albert Watson, boxer Samuel Hillery and 'The Singing Butcher' John Johnson. Other images relate to the likes of workers on the tramway, which once terminated nearby, and the Moyola Arms pub, which previously stood on the site where the new artwork is located.
Belfast City Council said the piece has already proved a great success with tourists, especially those staying in the nearby International Youth Hostel on the Donegall Road.
It is a companion piece to another mural, on the theme of the Titanic, which was completed on the side of the nearby Allen's furnishings store on the Donegall Road earlier this year.
The work was commissioned Belfast City Council, who have been working with Sandy Row Community Forum and Sandy Row Residents Association, alongside Ed Reynolds, to create the highly visible art piece. The project was also supported by the Department of Social Development and the NI Housing Executive.
Ed Reynolds previously worked with the Brat Initiative and on the Shankhill Road's 're-imaging communities' programme.

Trouble flares in Protestant Sandy Row area at weekend
Police were attacked with blast bombs during a second night of rioting in Belfast. A car and a minibus were set alight in Monday's disturbances in the mainly Protestant Sandy Row area. This followed disturbances on Sunday in the same area when a shop front was damaged after three cars were set on fire.

Machete Attack In South Belfast
A man received serious facial injuries in a machete attack in south Belfast. The attack, which occurred at around 2.15am on Sunday in Glenmachen Street, left the victim with a serious facial injury. Police later had a report of a man seen with a machete in the Sandy Row area. Police have appealed for any witnesses to the attack to contact them.

Hope Street Opens To Two Way Traffic
Belfast’s Hope Street is to be opened to two-way traffic from Sunday evening. The Roads Service has said the modifications to the city centre street will create an additional northbound route for traffic on Great Victoria Street via Hope Street, Sandy Row, Durham Street and College Square North.

Pedestrian Dies Following Road Traffic Collision Ikn West Belfast
A female pedestrian in her 70s has tragically died following a road traffic collision in west Belfast on Saturday, 9th November. The incident occurred on Hannahstown Hill shortly after 6:50pm when two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle. Emergency services attended the scene, and the injured pedestrians were taken to hospital.

Armed Men Rob Shop In Sandy Row Area
Police have launched an investigation following an armed robbery at a shop in the Sandy Row area in Belfast on Saturday. Two men, armed with knives, entered the premises at around 6.45pm. One man stole a quantity of cigarettes and money from the till, while the other man stood at the door.
