Olympics Boost UK Employment Figures

The boost in jobs in London could be down due to the positive effect of the Olympic Games.

The total number of jobless people in the UK fell by 46,000 in the three months to June, and much of the fall was recorded in the capital, where the Olympics have just finished and the Paralympics will start soon.

But public figures took the unemployment drop in various different ways, and Graeme Leach of the Institute of Directors said the only certainty in the latest labour market figures was uncertainty.

The government said the news showed that private sector companies were creating jobs despite the recession, but Dave Prentis of Unison said there would be "no lasting Olympics legacy in the jobs market".

He continued: "The end of thousands of temporary jobs will see unemployment climbing after the summer."
