Executive Warns Against Illegal Fireworks

Those of us planning to use fireworks throughout the autumnal weeks leading up to Halloween have been issued a warning by the Executive.

In a statement released today, Justice Minister David Ford reminded everyone planning to purchase fireworks they must obtain the appropriate licence.

It is a legal requirement to have a licence to buy, sell or use fireworks in Northern Ireland. The Executive has said anyone intending to use fireworks over the Halloween period must submit their application to the Department of Justice no later than 23 October 2012.

Minister Ford said: "Fireworks are a fun part of Halloween but everyone should be aware that those who want to enjoy fireworks over Halloween must have a valid licence. The purchase, or use, of fireworks without a licence is an offence. You can ensure you have a safe and fun Halloween by applying for your licence now."

In the statement, the Minister also warned against obtaining fireworks from sources other than from a registered supplier.

He said: "Fireworks must be purchased from a supplier who has been registered by the Department of Justice.

"Don’t be tempted to buy from illegal sources as you will be gambling with the safety of your family and friends and could also face prosecution for breaking the law."

Registered retailers are legally required to display a valid licence or certificate of registration prominently at the point of sale.

Minister Ford added: "I appeal to parents and retailers to act responsibly, comply with the law and use fireworks safely to help reduce firework injuries and ensure Halloween is an enjoyable time for everyone."
