City Of Culture Venue Announced
L'Derry's UK City of Culture success has been given a further boost following the announcement of the venue that will host the city’s major indoor events in 2013.
Belfast-based Extraspace Ltd. have been given the contract to provide the venue for L'Derry's UK City of Culture year, which will be located at the former army base in Ebrington behind the clock tower on the main square.
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland unveiled the plans today, along with an artist’s impression of what the venue will look like.
He said: "I welcome the signing of the contract to provide the much needed large venue for the UK City of Culture. The drawings demonstrate that my Department will provide a fantastic state of the art facility that will help ensure the success of the UK City of Culture programme.
"This venue will allow the UK City of Culture to deliver an extensive range of programmes and events to all the people of Londonderry and beyond. I look forward to the forthcoming release of the cultural programme with eager anticipation."
Extraspace Ltd’s venue will host over 40 major indoor events during 2013.
Clearance work has already begun and it is expected to be in place in time for the inaugural event of the 2013 programme on New Year’s Eve.
The Department for Social Development is working in partnership with Ilex, the Strategic Investment Board and Central Procurement Directorate to deliver the facility.

City Of Culture Events Pavilion Completed
Works on the UK City of Culture Events Pavilion in L’Derry have been completed. Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland announced the completion of 'the Venue' at Ebrington, as the city prepares for its role as the first UK City of Culture. Contractors Extraspace Ltd. have officially handed the Venue over to the Department.
